Bholu and the monsoon drain
Three hours in cold water before a shopkeeper heard him cry and called us.
During a heavy monsoon downpour, a small calf slipped into an overflowing drain near the main market. For three hours he stood in cold, rushing water, crying, too small to climb out.
A shopkeeper closing his shutter heard the cries and called our helpline. Our rescue team arrived with ropes and a harness, and two sevaks climbed into the drain to lift him out gently.
He was shivering, exhausted and had swallowed dirty water. At the centre he was dried, kept warm and treated for a chest infection over the next week.
We named him Bholu. Today he is the naughtiest calf at our Goshala — he steals rotis from every visitor and runs circles around the older cows.
