Ganga walks on three legs
Hit by a speeding truck at midnight. She lost a leg — but not her spirit.
It was just past midnight when a truck driver called us from the highway near the toll plaza. A young cow had been hit by a speeding truck and was lying in the middle of the road, unable to move.
Our ambulance reached her in under thirty minutes. One sevak sat beside her on the road, calming her and keeping traffic away, while the others lifted her onto the stretcher. Her back leg was crushed beyond repair.
At the treatment centre our vets fought through the night. To save her life, they had to amputate the leg. For days afterwards she refused to stand, and we wondered if she ever would.
Then, on the twenty-fourth day, she pushed herself up on three legs and took her first wobbly steps. The whole team cheered.
Today Ganga walks on three legs — and still leads the herd to water every morning. She is waiting for a family to adopt her.
