Gauri's 20 kilos of plastic
She was found on a garbage dump, too weak to stand. The vet removed 20 kg of polythene from her stomach in a 4-hour surgery.
Gauri was found on a garbage dump at the edge of the city, too weak to stand. She had an infected wound on her leg and had stopped eating for days. A shopkeeper who had watched her grow thinner every week finally called our helpline.
Our ambulance brought her to the treatment centre that night. When the vet examined her, the cause was clear: her stomach was hard and swollen, packed with polythene she had eaten from the garbage for years.
The next morning our team performed a 4-hour surgery and removed 20 kg of polythene from her stomach. Doctors were unsure she would survive. For the first week she barely moved.
"Her eyes changed first. Then she started walking." — our Chief Veterinarian
Six weeks of care later, Gauri eats green fodder again and is the first to greet every visitor at the Goshala gate. Her story is why we go to schools and markets to talk about plastic — one bag at a time.
